 collection 1

David Wang’s debut collection explores the intersection of natural dyeing and upcycling while deconstructing gender norms.

With a staunch commitment to reducing new fabric consumption, Wang designed this entire collection using otherwise unused fabrics from around his home. Through careful craftsmanship and the beauty of natural dyeing, the worn fabrics, some of which had tears and were visibly aged over decades of use, were transformed with new life.

Half of the fabrics were dyed pink using avocado pits collected through consumption of avocado toast, and the other half dyed blue with black beans that were cooked or planted afterwards. The collection transitions from traditionally masculine to feminine silhouettes and colors, blurring the boundaries of gendered fashion.

Wang released a limited edition lookbook to commemorate his debut collection. The lookbook provided an intimate view into the inspiration and process behind the collection as well as featured exclusive content on the final results. The lookbooks were provided at-cost (to cover print and shipping) with the goal to spread tangible art in a world oversaturated with digital content.

At the time of the collection’s launch in August 2020, California was in the midst of one of the most severe wildfire seasons in recorded history. For each lookbook purchased, Wang matched 15% as a donation to California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund. In total, over $170 was donated to to support both mid-term and long-term recovery efforts for those devastated by California wildfires.
